My first impression of junior was comical and realistic. He seems to find the humor in his serious condition and situation. Junior is also very realistic with his humor because he does not sugar coat his story to make it more interesting. The people on the rez, the ones whom are suppose to be like his family, see him as retarded and a target. I did at one point in my adolescent ages keep a diary. It was a good release of thought and emotion, with out having to worry about anyone judging you and your thoughts. I believe that junior kept one for this same reason; you are able to confide in the paper with no worries of judgments. Junior emphasizes that his diary is “absolutely true” because he is being brutally honest with himself and in his writing.
I can relate to the lifeboat analogy with my enjoyment of my home life and family. I am able to just enjoy the innocents of my children when my life is not dealing me so innocent situations. At my home I can really choose how I want to live and what I want to deal with at that moment, kind of like my sweet escape from the hectic world. That is my camouflage from the world.
The one phrase that I liked the most and thought that it was a good description was “They stared at me like I was Bigfoot or a UFO.” (Pg 56) I can remember staring at a new school and having this exact feeling. You tend to feel completely out of place and like no one is like you, that everyone is noticing you and staring, making judgments and accusations. Their stares make you think that they had never seen someone like you before. So I liked this quote because I can relate to it, and it paints such a good picture of what Junior is feeling at that moment.
